June 19, 20 & 21, 2008

To say that the internet up here is sporadic is an understatement!! Even tho the park we are in says they have internet, that doesn't mean it works. Very frustrating!!!

We are still in Whitehorse. Mike decided to change the brake pads on the RV before we go any farther. He has been watching the RV brake pads closely because of how hot they got when we lost the brakes on the truck. No problem.....wrong...they had to order the pads because we have disc brakes. They should be here Monday and we'll be off again!

Today was another rainy day so couldn't really do much outside. We had planned to hike around the lake but that will have to wait until tomorrow. We did get about 2 hours of sunshine so we took the scooter for a long ride. Unfortunately, didn't make it back before the rain started! COLD!!

Friday - June 20, 2008
Today is our beautiful daughter's birthday.....Happy Birthday, Tanya!!! We rode the train to Skagway. It is a great ride and the scenery is breathtaking. We saw several bears along the tracks. Skagway is almost totally a tourist town. Their main income is from the cruise ships.
3 hours there was plenty of time.

Thursday - June 19, 2008
Another necessary day...house cleaning, laundry, etc. We tried to buy brake pads for the RV to no avail. We finally found someone to order them for us. They should be here Monday, then Mike can get them changed and we will be on our way again.

June 15, 16, 17 & 18, 2008

Today is the first time we have had internet for several days. Either the campground didn't have it or it was not working. After we crossed over into the Yukon, we lost cell service. We will be in Skagway Friday so it SHOULD resume.

Wednesday - June 18, 2008
We toured the SS Klondike. The last working paddlewheeler in the Yukon. There are several museums in the area. Great walking trails around the town.

Tuesday - June 17, 2008
We arrived in Whitehorse a day ahead of schedule. So far, the road has been good, the truck is getting good MPH (12-14). Whitehorse is the capital of the Yukon. There are 32,000+ people in the Yukon and 23,000+ live in Whitehorse. Didn't see much wildlife today but the lakes and rivers are beautiful.

Monday - June 16, 2008
We made it to Watson Lake. Saw more bear (one really close), several coyotes and elk. The scenery is just breathtaking.

Sunday - June 15, 2008
We stayed at Laird Hot Springs. The springs felt so good. They were hotter than the normal spa but felt great. We saw several animals today. Bears, Stone sheep, caribou, deer but no moose! It has been a really good day.

June 14, 2008

Today is the day!!!! We started on the famous Alaskan Highway or better know as the AlCan Highway. Of course, it is raining! The road is really pretty good...we did not know what to expect as we had heard so many different reports. It is 2 lane and paved. Of course, some areas are worse than others. There are some fairly steep grades but just take it slow and easy!

We didn't see anything but coyotes, hawks and ravens.....no bears or moose. We stopped for lunch and one of the other couples didn't and they had 2 large black bears cross the highway in front of them. Gonna stop feeding Mike!

June 13,2008

Toured Dawson Creek ---- mile 0 of the Alaskan Highway. Most all of the people in our campground are headed to Alaska so we kinda all travel together but if you want to stop, you can and just catch up later The people next to us are from Florida, the guys behind us are from Labrador, some others are from Arizona, etc. Nobody else is from Texas tho. Beautiful sunshine and warmer temps today so we were all able to sit out and visit.

June 8-12, 2008

Sunday - June 8th
We toured Banff and Lake Louise. So beautiful!!! Of course, the only wildlife we saw was hawks, foxes and coyotes. We had planned to go the alternate route to Dawson Creek thru the Banff NP but it is $20.00 extra a day to camp in the park. Although it is very pretty, with the weather we decided to go the most direct route.
Banff is a quaint little town with lots of atmosphere. We tried Canadian Mexican food....VERY DIFFERENT. Haven't every had celery in burritos before.

Monday - June 9th
We toured Calgary. It is a big. big city with lots of sky scrapers. We went thru the NWMP historical site. Saw the Olympic Park. In the winter you can use the facilities.....we don't have that level skills.

Tuesday - June 10th
RAIN, RAIN, RAIN and MORE RAIN!!!!!!! We didn't do anything today. Just stayed inside.

Wednesday - June 11th
More rain but we left anyway. On to Whitecourt. Nice little town with SUNSHINE!!!! The farther north we went, the better the weather.

Thursday - June 12th
On to Dawson Creek, BC and 0 mile. This is the start of the Alaskan Highway. We have seen so many beautiful big farms. I love barns and there are so many great ones in this part of the country. Tomorrow, onward and upward!

June 7, 2008

Another rainy, dreary day!! We had planned to visit the Olympic park in Calgary but not in the rain. We did some in Calgary but not much. We do plan to return to Calgary to tour the Olympic park, the Stampede park and several other outdoor sites. We are both starting to get "cabin fever" as neither of us likes to stay indoors much!!! Today was too bad to even take CoCoa on the dog walk. Of course, she doesn't do rain anyway.

Didn't think I would miss good ole Texas summer! I know it has to stop wet weather soon.......they do have summer up here, right?????

June 5 & 6, 2008

The last 2 days have been spent exploring the areas around Cochrane. We have seen some beautiful farm/ranch land. Several museums and met lots of nice people.
Visited a great miniature horse farm. I could easily live there. I loved those little guys!! Mike said I could have a mini "IF" it could be house broken. Guess not! Seriously, I have always wanted to try my hand raising and training them for the pony carts.....have strange ideas of fun!!

The park we are at has great walking trail. It is owned by the city and is along the river. You can let the dogs run.......it works really well. CoCoa has several new friends.
Surprise!!!! It's raining again.

June 4, 2008

What a difference a day makes!!! The sun is shinning, the birds are singing and I feel much better. So onward and upward thru Canada. Okay, Okay Canada is a much better place than I thought yesterday. There are some beautiful, huge farms. More "life thru the windshield" pictures as we drive.

We are parked at Bow RiversEdge Campground in Cochrane, AB. It is a great campground...nice big sites, full hookups, a great dog walk along the river. We will be here a week so I think we are going to try putting the boat in the river.

June 3, 2008

So far my impression of Canada is not the best....of course, it has only been one day. The best is that everything is so green. The worst is that it is cold, rainy and miserable!! Diesel is $6.11 a gallon. YIKES!!!! It was getting cheaper ($4.35 in Helena, MT) the further north we went but NOT HERE!

We did some tourist things today but everyplace was so expensive. Our most fun thing was Fort Whoop Up!!! Yep, that's a real fort. It was established in 1869 and was one of the most notorious for dealing contraband booze. One of the first NWMP stations. Such a hoot. Then we went to the Alberta Bird of Prey Refuge. My kind of place.

Tomorrow we are headed for Calgary. We plan to spend several days in that area. Unfortunately, we have reservations in Seward during the time of the Calgary Stampede.

June 2, 2008

WooHoo!!!! We made it to Canada. Everything is so beautiful and green!

We are in Lethbridge, AB. We will be staying here a couple of days to see what we can of this area. It was a beautiful drive from Helena, MT. Customs crossing into Canada was not bad. There was no waiting line and we were the only RV in the search area....mostly visited with the boarder guards. They played with CoCoa and had several questions about the 5th wheel. Very nice friendly people!

I am feeling better today but still look like Mike beat me.....he says he didn't!! Seriously, the antibiotics seem to be working so guess I will survive. Leave it to me to have something weird happen.

And, OF COURSE, the weather is still following us. At least it waited until after we set up to start raining....NO SNOW!

May 31 & June 1

5/31 Woke up feeling a little off (DON"T SAY IT) this morning. After doing some housework type stuff we set out to finish exploring Helena. It is a great little town. Reminds me of Austin way, way back when we were in school!! We took the tram around the city, lots of historic info.
Went thru a couple of museums and by the time we were finished, my face had started swelling. YUK!!! Even more not pretty than normal. I thought I had been stung by something, Mike thought I had a bad tooth. So home we went, I took Benedryl and went to sleep.

6/2 What a difference a night makes.......my face is awful. Off to the emergency room. Not allergy, not tooth but an impacted saliva gland. What??? Antibiotics and if it's not better by Tuesday they want me to go see an ENT. I want to be in Canada by then. Anyway, back home and back to bed. POUT, POUT------I'm not having fun!
